Chino Canyon Residence

The design strategy for this new house was to capture the commanding views of the Coachella Valley on the slopes above Palm Canyon Drive in the Chino Canyon neighborhood. The living areas of the house look out past the infinity pool to the Little San Bernardino Mountains in the east and the city lights of the Palm Springs neighborhoods below. From the bedroom wing, the views to the south are of the San Jacinto Mountain range and the dazzling display of light on the various peaks at sunset. The best vantage point is from the mezzanine and the adjacent deck located above the kitchen. This 4,500 SF house was designed to maximize the existing site topography by terracing down the grade from west to east. Keeping in mind that while views are important so is the need to shade the windows from the harsh desert sun, deep eaves sail out past the exterior walls.

For the landscape design we preserved several of the existing Palo brea trees and augmented with new Desert Museum Palo verde for additional shade. The site design also recomposes the existing boulders found on site, here they form a sculptural base for the pool deck plinth. The understory planting scheme uses native desert plants grouped in broad sweeps of similar color and forms.
